This week, when Academy Award nominations were announced, the omission of Ang Lee's Lust, Caution from the Foreign Language Film category struck me as a travesty. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences rejected the NC-17 thriller set in Japanese-occupied China on the grounds that there was not enough Taiwanese participation in the film, which is total bullshit, since Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, a 2000 Oscar winner in the same category, qualified as a Taiwanese submission while having a similar mix of Mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwanese talent.
There is only one explanation for this omission. And that is that The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences HATES SEX. They are not, to use a shopworn phrase, bringing sexy back. They are not, dare I say, a very sexy group in general (the average age of an Academy voter is over fifty).
Lust, Caution was hands-down the best movie that I saw all year. Ang Lee and Co. wuz robbed. The Academy can bite me.
Oh, right, they don't do that. Alright then, Fuck y'all.
Shit, they don't do that either. Well fine, just suck it.
Ah jeez, never mind. I can't talk to these artless, heartless, sexless people.
